VARIETIES OF FIGURATIVE PAINTING

In the XVII century, a thematic or story picture was attributed to the high genre (grand genre) and called the genre.
The high genre included: allegorical, battle, epic, household, historical, mythological and religious genres.
In recent years, in Russia the concept of thematic picture is increasingly replaced by the term figurative.
Figurative began to be called not only the plot composition, but all the works, which depict human figures.

Figurative painting in the allegorical genre Allegorical genre (from Greek. allegoria-allegory) – a genre of fine art, in which a work of art is laid hidden and secret meaning. In this genre, ideas that are difficult to depict (for example, goodness, strength, power, justice, love, etc.) are shown allegorically through images of living beings, animals or human figures with attributes that historically have a symbolic, easy-to-read meaning. Allegorical genre is most characteristic of Renaissance art, mannerism, Baroque, classicism.

Battle genre (derived from FR. bataille-battle) – a genre of fine art, which depicts the themes of war: battles, military campaigns, praising military valor, the fury of the battle, the triumph of victory.

Mythological (from Greek. mythos-legend) – a genre of fine art dedicated to the heroes and events, which tell the myths and legends of ancient peoples
Figurative painting in the Nude genre
Nu (derived from FR. nu-naked, stripped) – one of the genres of fine art, dedicated to the image of the naked body, mostly female. In its development, Nude is closely associated with the image of the naked human body and embodies the ideal of beauty of the country and the era. Nude originated in the Renaissance within the mythological, allegorical, historical and everyday genres. The formation of Nudes as a genre occurs in the 17th century with the spread of the ideas of sensualism: images of the naked body are imbued with a frankly sensual beginning.
